Garnet sand is a natural mineral abbrasive. Its main constituent is Almandite garnet, which is one of the hardest minerals.
Due to its properties, hardness and abrasive effect, it is specially suited for surface cleaning, and the machining of ferrous or softer metals, and zinc and aluminium castings. It is also used for the hacking of galvanized parts before painting.
In waterjet cutting technology, it is used as an additive.
It first entered the European market from mines in Australia. Since then, the increased demand has been satisfied with pomegranate sand from mines opened on other continents, whereby variants appear from India, China or the Arabian Peninsula too. More recently, mines have also opened in America, where the quality obtained is the same as the Australian.
GMA: Garnet sand from Australia contains high-purity premium grains. It is ferrite-free, making it an excellent choice for cleaning stainless materials, non-ferrous and precious metals. Due to its high quality, it ensures fast waterjet cutting speed.
The mash size of garnet sands from other mines is the same as the GMA range. It is used particularly for shot blasting, while the performance loss is more significant in waterjet cutting.
Considering its properties, it belongs to the most advanced abrasive cleaning grains, which can be used in free jet systems for outdoor tasks.
